The Film Industry versus Real Life as a young woman

I do not wear pink on Wednesdays, sorry.

As we all know, the film industry - the Hollywood film industry - is full of clichés about genders, social life and people's tastes. And as a young woman who loves binge-watching Rom-Coms and teen drama series on Netflix, I noticed one thing about my - sometimes - favourite characters : they mainly have the same « life pattern ». And I’m going to tell you what this life pattern is composed of, and how it is totally different from real life.

1 - The « NYC-based flats » :

With a wide view on Central Park AND the MoMA AND the Statue of Liberty - wait, how ?!.
And let’s not forget that they’re composed of :
  • a large kitchen and dining-room area
  • a cosy living-room
  • a dressing-room
  • a chic and girly bedroom
  • a HUGE bathroom
  • a balcony. of course.

From Young & Hungry (I wish I shared a flat like that with my best friend)

From The Confessions Of A Shopaholic

Real life is : NOPE. If you want to live in NYC, you’ll mainly end up in this kind of « flat » :
OR you still live at home with your parents in your small country town OR you’re in college and live in the university dorm room. Don’t get us wrong.

2 - The parties…

Well, obviously, even though our favourite movie characters don’t have the biggest social life ever, they’re still invited to the coolest parties, don’t want to go there, but feel really great and have the best time of their life when they finally come to them. Damn.

When Mrs. Larson encourages her daughter Megan to go to a party and she comes back looking like this in Barely Lethal

Real life is : Spending your Saturday nights catching up on your Netflix series, meowing at your cat and painting your toe nails for nothing because nobody will see them except you. Oh I wish I could live in a Hollywood film-like world…

I've actually never watched 90210. Booh.

3 - The « love of your life »

Let’s not even… okay, one thing: even if it will never happen the same way as in The Notebook, it also won’t happen the same way as in The First Time. Full stop.

 Meh.

Nay you do, boy.

Real life is : Double-tapping photos of Dr. Mike and Pietro Boselli on Instagram and wishing they were your doctor and your maths professor (even though maths is not part of your College Major).

4 - Complete makeovers

It always goes great, it’s funny, it’s cool… and it happens with « Bad Reputation » playing in the background. Because, of course, it’s easy to change your whole style and go from a « no-no » to a « hell yeah » in High School without anyone thinking « wtf what happened » but instead « woaw damn didn’t notice that fine chick » (who speaks like that anyway).

If you think about it, Anne Hataway went through 2 major makeovers in movies.

Aaaand... let's not forget about this one !

Real life is : Your mum entering your room and froncing her eyes while saying « Why are you tearing up my blouse from the 80’s? Give me that back! And what’s wrong with your eyelid? Did someone hit you? [Mum I'm trying to do a cat's eyes makeup actually] » and you giving up when you finally try to sing « Bad Reputation » while taking the « super-shower » but ending up having shampoo in your eyes and making every bottle on the shelves fall.

Me. Every day of my life.

Sooo... here it is for this post! I know that the "Real life" parts are also full of clichés, but I wanted to make it a little extreme because, yes, I, right now, don't picture myself in a huge NYC flat. But it's okay! Rom-Coms and teen drama movies and series are also a way of making us dream and aim for deeper, further goals... as long as they do not soak into an impossible-things-to-reach ocean...! (wow... what a metaphor! okay bye) And also because, if they were to film about our real real life, it would be a bit annoying... and that's part of the film industry to make it seem a little more sparkly!
See you next time
